3-second answer: E22 on a Bosch dishwasher is a drainage fault — the water hasn’t cleared the filter and sump fast enough, so the dishwasher leaves water sitting in the base and stops. The single most common cause is a clogged filter at the bottom of the tub. Cancel the cycle, switch off the power, bail out the standing water, clean the filter and sump, and check the drain hose. Clear the filter and E22 goes away most of the time.

Most online guides about E22 stop at “clean the filter” — which is the right place to start but skips the sump, the drain hose, and the pump checks that catch the cases a filter clean misses. This guide is the full diagnostic flow our Bosch dishwasher specialists walk customers through: the six real causes ranked by frequency, the safe five-step DIY fix (including exactly how to bail the standing water without flooding the kitchen and where the impeller hides), and an honest read on when the drain pump itself has failed.

What does E22 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
On Bosch dishwashers, E22 (sometimes shown as E:22 or fault “22”) is a drainage fault — specifically, the dirty wash water is not clearing the filter and sump at the bottom of the tub the way the control board expects. The dishwasher monitors how quickly the water level in the base drops during the drain phase. When the water doesn’t clear in time, the board halts the program, often leaves water standing in the base, and shows E22 to stop itself from running a wash or rinse on a flooded sump.
In plain English: the dirty water can’t get past the filter and out. Something between the bottom of the tub and the drain in your cabinet is blocked, restricted, or not pumping — and most of the time it’s something you can clear yourself in fifteen minutes. E22 belongs to Bosch’s drainage error family, alongside E24 (a drain-blockage / hose fault) and E25 (a blocked or stuck drain pump). They overlap in symptoms, so this guide checks all the same physical points. If yours simply won’t pump out at all, our Bosch dishwasher not draining guide covers the same drain path from the “no drain” angle. For other codes, see our hub on appliance error codes.
Top 6 causes of the Bosch dishwasher E22 code

Across hundreds of Bosch dishwasher service calls in Toronto, North York, Markham, and across the GTA, this is roughly how E22 causes break down. Knowing which one you’re dealing with determines whether you need a free fifteen-minute fix or a $250+ repair.
- Clogged dishwasher filter — by far the most common cause. Every Bosch dishwasher has a fine filter assembly (the cup-shaped micro-filter plus the flat mesh screen) sitting in the bottom of the tub under the lower spray arm. It traps food, grease, glass grit, and labels off jars. When it cakes over, water can’t drain through it fast enough and E22 fires. This is the cause to check first, and it’s a free fix.
- Blocked sump or debris under the filter — also common. Below the filter is the sump — the recessed well that feeds the drain pump. Broken glass, a fruit pit, a bottle cap, or a build-up of sludge can sit in the sump and choke the flow even when the filter itself looks clean. You clear it by hand and with a wet/dry vacuum once the filter is out.
- Kinked or clogged drain hose — less common. The drain hose runs from the pump up and over to your sink drain or air gap. If it’s kinked behind the cabinet, crushed, or clogged with grease sludge, the pump can’t move water against the resistance and E22 triggers. Hoses that loop too low or sag also let water sit and back up.
- Garbage-disposal or air-gap blockage — less common. Bosch dishwashers usually drain into the kitchen sink plumbing. A new garbage disposal with the knock-out plug still in place, a disposal full of debris, or a clogged air gap on the countertop will stop the water leaving and throw E22. The tell: water backs up into the sink or the air gap spits during drain.
- Drain pump fault or jammed impeller — uncommon. A small object (glass shard, toothpick, label) can lodge against the drain pump impeller — the little fan that pushes water out — and jam it, or the pump motor can wear out after years of service. If the filter, sump, and hose are clear but the pump makes no sound (or buzzes without moving water) during drain, the pump needs attention. This is parts + labour, typically a 30-to-60 minute tech job.
- Pump-control or main board fault — rare. Last resort. The drain-pump circuit on the control board, or a wiring/connector fault, can misfire E22 even when the water has actually drained. Diagnosis is by elimination: everything physical checks out but E22 persists. This is a technician diagnosis, not a DIY repair.
The cause distribution above is field experience from Bosch dishwasher repair across the GTA, not a published Bosch study. It maps to how cases actually walk through our shop. The next section is the safe at-home fix that clears cause #1 (and often #2 and #3) without a service call.
How to fix the Bosch E22 code in 5 steps

The exact diagnostic sequence our techs walk Bosch owners through. Most E22 codes clear on steps 2 and 3 alone (bail the water, clean the filter and sump). Steps 4 and 5 isolate the harder causes. Total elapsed time: 15 to 25 minutes. Have old towels, a cup or jug, and a wet/dry vacuum ready — there will be standing water in the base.
Safety first. Always switch the dishwasher off and unplug it (or flip the breaker) before reaching into the sump. The standing water can be hot if a cycle was running, and there may be broken glass in the filter — wear a glove and work slowly so you don’t cut your hand or flood the floor.
- Cancel the cycle and power off (1 min). Cancel the running program (on most Bosch models, press and hold the Start button for about 3 seconds, or use the cancel/reset combination for your model). Then switch the dishwasher off and unplug it at the wall or flip the breaker. This is non-negotiable before you reach into the base — you’re about to work near water and the pump.
- Bail out the standing water (5 min). Open the door and look at the bottom of the tub. Scoop the standing water out with a cup or jug into a bucket, then finish with old towels or a wet/dry vacuum until the base is dry enough to work in. This empties the sump so you can see what you’re doing and so it doesn’t slop over when you lift the filter.
- Clean the filter and sump (5 min). Lift out the lower rack. Twist the cylindrical filter counter-clockwise (usually a quarter-turn) and lift it out, then remove the flat mesh screen under it. Rinse both under the tap with a soft brush to clear grease and food. Now look into the sump well underneath — clear any glass, food, or sludge by hand and finish with the wet/dry vacuum. Seat the screen flat and screw the filter back in firmly; a loose filter leaks and re-triggers faults.
- Check the drain hose, disposal, and air gap (5 min). Pull the dishwasher out if you can, and check the drain hose for kinks or crushing behind the cabinet. Under the sink, confirm the hose connection isn’t clogged with grease. If your dishwasher drains through a garbage disposal, run the disposal and make sure the knock-out plug was removed at installation. If you have a countertop air gap, pop the cap and clear any debris. Any of these can block the water from leaving.
- Check the pump impeller and run a test drain (5 min). With the filter out, shine a light into the sump and look at the drain pump impeller at the bottom — gently check that it isn’t jammed by a shard or label (power must be OFF). Reassemble the filter, restore power, and run a short Rinse or the drain portion of a cycle. If it drains and E22 clears, you’re done. If the pump makes no sound, buzzes without moving water, or E22 returns immediately, the pump or control board has failed — that’s tech time.
If steps 2-3 cleared E22 — great, you’re done, no service call needed. If steps 4-5 pointed at a failed pump or board, you’ve already saved your tech most of the diagnosis. Book us online at book Bosch dishwasher repair online or call 647-834-4646.
How to reset the E22 code on a Bosch dishwasher
“Reset” is what most owners search for when E22 appears, so let’s be precise about it. A reset alone won’t fix a real drainage blockage — but it does clear a one-off E22 after you’ve removed the cause. There are two legitimate reset paths on a Bosch dishwasher:
- Program reset (clears a one-off E22). Press and hold the Start button for about 3 seconds until the program resets and the time clears (on some models it’s a labelled Reset or a Start + Cancel combination — check your model’s quick-start guide). Once the program is cancelled and the base is empty, start a fresh short cycle.
- Hard reset (forces a control reboot). Switch the dishwasher off, then unplug it at the wall or flip the breaker on its circuit. Wait 5 to 10 full minutes so the board fully powers down. Restore power. The display returns to default.
If E22 returns immediately after either reset — and there’s still water in the base — the water is not draining and you have NOT fixed the cause. Resetting an unsolved E22 just restarts the same failed drain. Clear the filter, sump, and hose first (the section above), then reset. If E22 persists after a clean filter, clear sump, clear hose, and free impeller, the drain pump or control board is the issue and our Bosch dishwasher specialists can usually confirm it in a 30-minute on-site visit.
Bosch dishwasher models affected by E22

E22 applies across Bosch’s dishwasher lineup, and the fix path is the same because they all share the filter-sump-pump drain design:
- Bosch 300, 500, and 800 Series. The mainstream North American lineup. All have the twist-out cylindrical filter and flat screen in the base, and a sump feeding the drain pump. The clogged-filter fix in Section 3 clears most E22 codes on these — and they’re the bulk of our Bosch E22 calls.
- Bosch Benchmark Series. The premium tier shares the same filter and sump layout; the fix is identical. Some Benchmark models display the fault as a code in the service menu rather than a large “E22” on the panel.
- Bosch Ascenta and older 100/Plus models. Older units are more likely to show E22 from a worn drain pump or grease-narrowed hose after years of service. If the filter and sump are clean and E22 returns, the pump is the prime suspect.
Quick cross-reference: E22, E24, and E25 are all in Bosch’s drainage family — E22 centres on the filter/sump not clearing in time, E24 on a blocked drain or hose, E25 on a blocked or stuck pump. Because they share the same drain path, the five-step fix above is the right starting point for all three.
Is the Bosch E22 code serious?
E22 is a protective shutdown, not a destructive failure. The control board is doing exactly what it should — stopping before it tries to wash or rinse on a flooded sump. Running a Bosch dishwasher through repeated E22 trips won’t damage it, but you’ll be stuck with dirty water sitting in the base until the drain is cleared, and that water will start to smell within a day or two.
The seriousness depends entirely on which cause is firing. Causes #1 (filter), #2 (sump), and #3 (hose) are inconvenient but routine — the dishwasher is otherwise fine and the fix is free or cheap. Cause #4 (disposal or air gap) is a plumbing-side fix, not a dishwasher fault. Cause #5 (failed or jammed pump) is a genuine repair, but a drain pump replacement on a Bosch dishwasher is usually a sensible cost — far below replacing the machine. Cause #6 (control board) is the only one where, on an older dishwasher, you’d weigh repair against replacement. The good news: the most common cause by a wide margin is the one you can fix yourself for free.
Cleaned the filter and E22 still won’t clear? That’s the signal the pump, hose, or board is the problem — and dirty water shouldn’t sit in the base for long. Same-day GTA Bosch dishwasher service across Toronto, North York, Markham, Vaughan, Bradford, and York Region.
When to call a Bosch dishwasher repair pro
Call us when any of these signals are present — at that point the at-home fix is exhausted:
- E22 returns right after you’ve cleaned the filter, sump, and hose, with water still failing to drain.
- The drain pump makes no sound during the drain phase, or buzzes loudly without pushing any water out — classic failed-pump signature.
- The impeller is seized or won’t move even after you’ve removed any obvious debris.
- Water backs up into the sink or the air gap spits — a plumbing-side blockage that may need attention alongside the dishwasher check.
- E22 appears with the base looking dry and no standing water — possibly a control-board or sensor misread.
- You’re not comfortable bailing the water or reaching into the sump near broken glass — there’s no shame in it; that’s what same-day service is for.
Our Bosch-trained techs cover Toronto Bosch dishwasher repair, North York dishwasher service, Markham dishwasher repair, and the wider GTA. We carry common Bosch drain pumps on the truck for same-day repairs. $89 service-call, applied to the repair if you approve it on the spot. 90-day warranty on parts and labour.
Preventing E22 long-term
Four habits that prevent E22 from coming back:
- Clean the filter every 2-4 weeks. This single habit prevents the most common cause of E22 — five minutes, a soft brush, and a rinse under the tap.
- Scrape plates before loading. Bones, fruit pits, labels off jars, and large food chunks are the number-one things we pull out of clogged Bosch filters and sumps. Scrape, don’t pre-rinse to nothing.
- Watch for glass. A broken glass sends grit straight into the filter and sump. After any breakage, pull the filter and check the sump before running the next cycle.
- Run hot water at the sink before starting, and run a dishwasher cleaner monthly to clear grease that narrows the drain hose over time.
Bosch dishwasher E22 error code FAQ
What does E22 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
E22 is a drainage fault. It means the dirty wash water isn’t clearing the filter and sump at the bottom of the tub fast enough during the drain phase, so the control board halts the program — usually leaving water standing in the base. The most common cause by far (roughly half of all E22 codes) is a clogged filter under the lower spray arm. Other causes are a blocked sump, a kinked or clogged drain hose, a garbage-disposal or air-gap blockage, a jammed or failed drain pump, and rarely a control-board fault.
How do I clear the E22 code on my Bosch dishwasher?
You have to remove the cause first, then reset. Cancel the program, switch off and unplug the dishwasher, bail the standing water out of the base, clean the filter and the sump underneath it, and check the drain hose, disposal, and air gap for blockages. Then run a short cycle to confirm it drains. A reset alone won’t fix E22 if the drain is genuinely blocked — clear the filter and sump first.
Where is the filter on a Bosch dishwasher?
It sits in the bottom of the tub, under the lower spray arm, in the centre of the base. Remove the lower rack, then twist the cylindrical filter counter-clockwise (usually a quarter-turn) and lift it out; there’s a flat mesh screen underneath that lifts out too. Rinse both under the tap with a soft brush, then clear the sump well below them by hand and with a wet/dry vacuum before reseating the screen and screwing the filter back in firmly.
Why does my Bosch dishwasher show E22 but the filter looks clean?
If the filter is clean and E22 still fires, the blockage is usually deeper — in the sump under the filter (broken glass, a pit, or sludge), in the drain hose, or at the garbage disposal or air gap. A jammed pump impeller or a worn drain pump can also cause it. Work down the drain path: clear the sump, check the hose and disposal, then check the impeller. If all of that is clear and E22 returns, the drain pump or control board needs a technician’s diagnosis.
Is E22 the same as E24 or E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?
They’re all in Bosch’s drainage error family and overlap in symptoms, but they point at slightly different things. E22 centres on the filter and sump not clearing the water in time; E24 is a drain-blockage or hose fault; E25 is a blocked or stuck drain pump. Because they share the same drain path, the same five-step fix — clean filter and sump, check hose and disposal, check the pump — is the right starting point for all three. See our Bosch E24 guide for the hose-blockage angle.
How much does it cost to fix E22 on a Bosch dishwasher?
It depends on the cause. A clogged filter, blocked sump, or kinked hose (the majority of cases) are free — you clear them yourself. A garbage-disposal or air-gap blockage is a plumbing-side fix, not a dishwasher repair. A failed or jammed drain pump is a parts-and-labour repair, typically a 30-to-60 minute job and far less than replacing the dishwasher. A control-board fault runs higher. If you’re weighing a major repair against a new machine, our dishwasher repair vs. replacement cost guide breaks down where the line usually falls. Our $89 service-call is applied to the repair if you approve it on the spot, and the final price depends on the diagnosis.
When should I call a Bosch dishwasher repair technician for E22?
Call us when E22 returns right after you’ve cleaned the filter, sump, and hose; when the drain pump makes no sound or buzzes without moving water; when the impeller is seized; when water backs up into the sink or the air gap spits (a plumbing issue); when E22 appears with a dry-looking base (possible board fault); or when you’re simply not comfortable bailing the water and reaching into the sump near broken glass.
