What do UE and IE mean on an LG washer?
UE and IE are two different faults that LG washer owners often mix up because they both stop the cycle. Here’s the clean distinction:
- UE (shown as UE or uE) — Unbalanced Error. The washer detects that the drum load is off-balance during the spin phase. Before it spins fast, the control board checks that the laundry is evenly distributed. If the load is bunched to one side, too small, or too large — or if the machine is sitting unlevel — the drum would shake violently at high speed, so the board stops, adds water, and tries to redistribute the load. If it can’t, it flashes UE and refuses to complete the spin.
- IE — Inlet Error (water-fill error). The washer detects that it hasn’t taken in enough water within the time it expects (typically a few minutes). The board fires IE when the water level isn’t rising fast enough at the start of a cycle — usually because the water supply is off or weak, a hose is kinked, an inlet screen is clogged, or the inlet valve has failed.
In plain English: UE means the load can’t spin safely; IE means the water can’t get in. UE vs uE — uppercase vs lowercase. On many LG washers, lowercase uE appears first: it’s the washer’s polite warning that it noticed a slight imbalance and is adding water to redistribute the load on its own. If it succeeds, the cycle continues and you never see anything else. Uppercase UE appears when those automatic re-balancing attempts have failed — the washer has given up trying to fix it itself and needs you to step in. So uE = “I’m working on it,” UE = “I need help.” Both point to the same family of causes below.
How to tell UE and IE apart
If you only saw the code flash and aren’t sure which one you have, use these tells:
- When in the cycle did it stop? UE almost always appears at or near the spin phase, after washing and draining. IE appears at the start, during fill, often before the wash even begins — the drum stays empty or barely wet.
- Is there water in the drum? UE: the cycle ran, so there’s usually wet laundry and possibly some water. IE: the drum is dry or has very little water because it never filled.
- Is the machine shaking or walking? Violent shaking, banging, or the washer “walking” across the floor points to UE (imbalance). IE has no shaking — it’s stuck quietly waiting for water.
- Listen at the start. IE: you may hear the inlet valve buzzing or clicking but little or no water actually flowing. UE: water flows fine; the problem is the spin.

UE (unbalanced load): top causes
Across hundreds of LG washer service calls in Toronto, North York, Markham, and across the GTA, this is roughly how UE causes break down. Most are a free fix; only the bottom two need a technician.
- Load too small, too large, or bunched to one side — by far the most common cause. A single heavy item (a bath mat, one pair of jeans, a comforter) or a tangled clump throws the drum off-centre. Too few items can’t distribute evenly; an overstuffed drum can’t move at all. This is the cause to suspect first, and it’s a free fix — just redistribute.
- Washer not level — also common. If the machine sits on an uneven floor or its feet aren’t adjusted, the drum tilts and the balance check fails even with a normal load. Front-loaders are especially sensitive. A washer that rocks when you push a corner is not level.
- Bulky or non-absorbent items spinning unevenly — common. Waterproof items (mattress protectors, rain jackets), single large towels, or items that trap air balloon out and refuse to settle, so the drum can never balance them. Washing them with a few smaller items usually fixes it.
- Shipping bolts left in (new installs) — occasional. On a recently delivered or moved washer, shipping bolts left in the back lock the drum’s suspension and guarantee UE. They must be removed before first use.
- Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers — uncommon. Over years of service, the rods or dampers that let the drum float and settle wear out. The drum then swings too far and the balance check fails on loads that used to be fine. This is a parts-and-labour repair.
- Failed balance / vibration sensor — rare. LG washers use a sensor to detect drum movement. If it misreads, the board can throw UE even when the load and levelling are perfect. Diagnosis is by elimination — everything physical checks out but UE persists.

How to fix the LG UE code (unbalanced load)
The exact sequence our techs walk LG owners through. Most UE codes clear on the first two steps alone. Total time: about 10 minutes.
Safety first. If the washer is mid-cycle with water in the drum, pause it and let it drain before reaching in. Don’t try to force the lid or door open during a spin — wait for the drum to stop completely.
- Pause and redistribute the load (3 min). Pause the cycle, open the door (wait for the drum to stop), and rearrange the laundry so it’s spread evenly around the drum. Break up any clump, unwind tangled sheets, and add a towel or two if you’re washing a single bulky item. Close up and resume the spin.
- Right-size the load (2 min). If the drum was nearly empty or packed tight, adjust it. One large item alone almost always trips UE — pair it with a few smaller items so the drum can balance. Don’t exceed the line marked in the drum.
- Check the washer is level (3 min). Push down on each corner — if it rocks, it’s not level. Adjust the levelling feet (turn them up or down so all four sit firmly on the floor) and tighten the lock nuts. A spirit level on top of the machine front-to-back and side-to-side confirms it.
- Confirm shipping bolts are out (1 min). On a new or recently moved washer, check the back panel for shipping bolts. If they’re still in, remove them — UE is guaranteed until they’re out.
- Run a spin-only test (3 min). Select a Spin-only cycle with a balanced load and watch it reach full speed. If it spins smoothly and UE doesn’t return, you’re done. If it shakes hard, “walks,” or throws UE again with a properly balanced and level machine, the suspension or balance sensor is the suspect — that’s tech time.

IE (water inlet): top causes
IE means the washer isn’t taking in enough water in time. Here’s how the causes break down, top to bottom — the first three are owner-fixable.
- Water supply off or low pressure — by far the most common cause. A tap behind the washer that’s partly or fully closed, a recently shut-off-and-not-reopened supply, or genuinely low household water pressure all starve the washer. Both hot and cold taps must be fully open. This is the first thing to check, and it’s a free fix.
- Kinked or crushed inlet hose — also common. The fill hoses run from the taps to the back of the washer. If one is kinked, crushed behind the machine, or pinched, water can’t flow fast enough and IE fires. Pushing the washer too tight to the wall is a frequent culprit.
- Clogged inlet screens / filters — common. Where the inlet hoses screw onto the back of the washer, there are small mesh screens (filters) that catch grit and mineral scale from the water line. In hard-water areas these clog over time, throttling the flow until IE triggers. Cleaning them is free.
- Frozen inlet hose — seasonal. In an unheated laundry room, garage, or against an exterior wall, the inlet hose or tap can freeze in winter and block flow entirely. Common in GTA winters when a washer sits in a cold space.
- Faulty water inlet valve — uncommon. The inlet valve is the electrically-operated valve that opens to let water in. Its solenoid can fail or its internal screen can clog so it won’t open properly. If the supply, hoses, and screens are all clear but no water comes in, the valve is the prime suspect. This is a parts-and-labour repair.
- Pressure (water-level) sensor or control fault — rare. The sensor that tells the board how full the tub is can misread, so the board thinks the water level isn’t rising even when it is. Or the control board misfires the IE flag. Diagnosis is by elimination — everything physical checks out but IE persists.

How to fix the LG IE code (water inlet) in 5 steps

Safety first. Before unscrewing any inlet hose, turn off the water taps and unplug the washer. There’s pressurized water at the connections — have a towel and small bowl ready, and loosen fittings slowly.
- Check the taps and water pressure (3 min). Confirm both the hot and cold supply taps behind the washer are fully open. If you recently had plumbing work or shut the water off, they may be partly closed. Open another tap nearby to confirm the house has normal pressure.
- Straighten the inlet hoses (3 min). Pull the washer out from the wall and check both fill hoses for kinks, crushing, or pinching. Reroute them so they run freely without being squashed against the wall. In winter, check that neither hose nor tap is frozen.
- Turn off the water and unplug (1 min). Close both taps and unplug the washer at the wall before opening any connection. This is non-negotiable before you touch the hose fittings.
- Clean the inlet screens (6 min). Unscrew the inlet hoses from the back of the washer (towel and bowl ready — some water will spill). Inside the inlet ports you’ll see small mesh screens. Pull them out gently with needle-nose pliers if needed, rinse them under the tap to clear grit and scale, and reseat them. Check the screens in the hose ends too. Screw the hoses back on firmly so they don’t leak.
- Reconnect and run a test fill (4 min). Reopen the taps, plug the washer back in, and start a short cycle. Watch the drum fill. If water flows normally and IE clears, you’re done. If little or no water comes in despite open taps, clear hoses, and clean screens — or you hear the valve buzzing without water flowing — the inlet valve or pressure sensor has likely failed, and that’s tech time.

How to reset UE or IE on an LG washer
“Reset” is what most owners search for when either code appears, so let’s be precise. LG washers don’t have a dedicated reset button, and a reset alone won’t fix a real imbalance or a genuine water-supply problem — but it does clear a one-off code after you’ve removed the cause.
- Soft reset (clears a one-off code). Press Power to turn the washer off. Wait 30 seconds. Press Power again, select your cycle, and press Start. For UE, do this after redistributing the load; for IE, after confirming the taps are open.
- Hard reset (forces a control board reboot). Unplug the washer at the wall, or flip the laundry-circuit breaker. Wait 5 to 10 full minutes so the board capacitors discharge, then plug back in. The display returns to default.
If UE returns immediately after a reset on a level machine with a balanced load, the suspension or balance sensor is the issue. If IE returns immediately with the taps open and screens clean, the inlet valve or pressure sensor is the issue. LG washer models affected by UE and IE
UE and IE apply across LG’s North American washer lineup, with small differences by type:
- LG Direct Drive front-loaders — Tromm, TurboWash, TwinWash, WashTower, and the standalone front-load lineup. Front-loaders are the most sensitive to UE because they spin fastest and demand precise balance; levelling matters most here. IE on these is usually taps, hoses, or inlet screens.
- LG top-loaders — WaveForce, True Balance, Smart Drum. True Balance models have extra anti-vibration engineering, so persistent UE often points to a single bulky item or a worn suspension rod rather than a normal load. IE causes are the same: supply, hoses, screens, valve.
- Older LG Tromm models (2008-2014). These show UE most often from worn shock absorbers after years of service, and IE from clogged inlet screens or a tired inlet valve. If the basics are clear and the code returns, the worn part is the prime suspect.
Quick cross-reference: on an LG dishwasher, IE also relates to water inlet — same idea, different machine. UE is specific to washers.
Are the UE and IE codes serious?
Both are protective behaviours, not destructive failures. With UE, the control board is refusing to spin a load that would shake the machine violently and could damage the drum bearings or “walk” the washer across the floor — it’s protecting itself. With IE, the board stops before running a wash with too little water, which would leave laundry dirty and could overheat a pump running dry.
Seriousness depends on the cause. For UE, an unbalanced load, an unlevel machine, or leftover shipping bolts (the most common causes) are quick, free fixes — the washer is otherwise fine. A few habits that keep both codes from coming back:
- Balance every load. Spread laundry evenly, and never spin a single bulky item alone — pair a comforter or bath mat with a few smaller pieces. This prevents most UE codes.
- Keep the washer level. Re-check the levelling feet after moving the machine or if it ever starts to shake; tighten the lock nuts so the feet can’t drift.
- Clean the inlet screens once or twice a year. In hard-water areas, grit and scale build up at the hose connections — a quick rinse keeps IE away.
- Protect hoses from cold and kinks. Don’t shove the washer hard against the wall, and if the laundry area gets cold in winter, insulate or relocate exposed hoses to prevent freezing.
