Key highlights

  • A dryer thermal fuse is a small safety device (a thermal cutoff) that cuts power when the dryer gets too hot.
  • It almost always blows because hot air cannot get out: a clogged lint path or a blocked dryer vent.
  • Depending on the model, a blown thermal fuse means the dryer will not start at all, or it runs with no heat.
  • You can test it for continuity with a multimeter, with the dryer unplugged.
  • A thermal fuse cannot be reset. Once it blows, it is replaced.
  • Replace the fuse without fixing the airflow and the new one blows too.

Why I am writing this

I am Zack, head technician at Appliance Forever. We repair dryers across the GTA, York Region and Simcoe County, and a blown dryer thermal fuse is one of the most common dryer calls we get. The part costs little. What matters is why it blew, because the fuse is the dryer telling you something is overheating.

What a dryer thermal fuse does

A dryer thermal fuse is a one-time thermal cutoff in the dryer’s electrical circuit. When the temperature around it goes past its limit, it opens and stops the power. It does not reset itself and it cannot be reset by hand.

Its job is to stop the dryer before heat builds up far enough to damage the machine or raise the risk of fire. If the fuse has blown, the dryer has already been running hotter than it should.

Why the symptoms differ between dryers

Where the fuse sits in the circuit decides what you see:

  • Dryer will not start at all: on many models the fuse is in the motor circuit, so nothing turns.
  • Dryer runs but there is no heat: on others it only cuts the heating side, so the drum spins and the clothes stay wet.

That is why the same failed part can look like two different problems. If your dryer is not heating, also see our guide to a clothes dryer not heating. For Samsung models, see Samsung dryer not heating.

Why a dryer thermal fuse blows

In most homes the root cause is poor airflow, not the dryer thermal fuse itself.

Lint buildup inside the dryer

Lint that gets past the screen collects in the lint duct and around the blower. Even a thin layer slows the hot air down and raises the temperature inside the cabinet. Clean the lint filter (lint trap) after every load, and look into the lint trap slot with a flashlight for packed lint.

A blocked or crushed dryer vent

The vent carries hot, damp air outside. If the vent hose or vent line is clogged with lint, crushed behind the dryer, too long, or blocked at the outside vent hood, the heat stays in the dryer and the fuse trips. Signs that point to the vent:

  • clothes take two or more cycles to dry (see dryer takes too long to dry clothes)
  • the outside flap barely opens when the dryer runs
  • the top of the dryer feels very hot
  • the laundry room gets warm and humid

A failing heating part

Less often, a faulty cycling thermostat or heating element lets the dryer run too hot. If the vent is clear and fuses keep blowing, that is the next thing a technician checks.

How to test a dryer thermal fuse (electric clothes dryers)

Only do this if you are comfortable working inside an appliance.

  1. Unplug the dryer. Pulling the plug is the only safe starting point. Do not rely on the dryer being switched off.
  2. Remove the panel that gives access to the fuse (see the brand table below and your model’s parts diagram).
  3. Disconnect one of the two wires on the fuse so you test only the fuse.
  4. Set a multimeter to continuity (or the lowest ohms range) and touch one probe to each terminal.
  5. Continuity (a beep or near-zero ohms): the fuse is fine. Look elsewhere. No continuity: the fuse is open and needs replacing.

Fit the exact dryer thermal fuse for your model number. Thermal fuses are not universal.

Never bypass a thermal fuse with a jumper wire, even “just to test”. It is the part that stops the dryer from overheating.

Where the dryer thermal fuse is, by brand

Location depends on the model, so check the parts diagram for your model number. These are the usual places we find it:

Dryer with the drum removed in Bradford, showing the blower housing and the heater duct
A dryer opened up in Bradford: the blower housing at the bottom and the heater duct on the right. The thermal fuse usually sits on or near these parts.
BrandWhere it usually isUsual access
Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore (Whirlpool-built), AmanaOn the blower housing or exhaust ductRemove the rear panel
SamsungOn the exhaust duct at the backRemove the rear panel
LGNear the heater duct or blowerOften needs the top and front panels off
GEOn or near the blower housingFront or rear panel, depending on model

If you cannot see it once the panel is off, stop there. It means a deeper strip-down for your model.

Gas dryers

Gas dryers have a thermal fuse too, but the heat side includes the gas valve and burner. If your gas dryer has no heat, or you smell gas, do not take it apart. Turn it off and call a licensed gas technician. Zack carries out our TSSA-certified gas work.

Replacing the dryer thermal fuse is only half the repair

A new fuse fixes the symptom, but it is only part of the solution. To stop repeat failures:

Dryer lint-filter housing with heavy lint build-up, Aurora
The lint-filter housing of a dryer in Aurora. Lint that gets past the screen builds up here.
  • clean the lint filter after every load
  • vacuum the lint-screen slot and the lint duct
  • check the vent hose behind the dryer: straight, not crushed, and not longer than your manual allows
  • make sure the outside vent hood opens freely and has no outside obstructions
  • have the full vent system cleaned regularly if the vent line is long or hard to reach

See our dryer maintenance guide for how often to do each check.

When to call us

Call a technician if:

  • the new dryer thermal fuse blows again
  • the vent is clear but the dryer still overheats
  • it is a gas dryer
  • you are not comfortable working inside the dryer

We come out same-day across the GTA, York Region and Simcoe County. The $89 visit is credited to the repair when you approve it, and every repair has a written 90-day warranty on parts and labour. For typical prices, see our dryer repair cost guide or our dryer repair service.

Dryer thermal fuse: quick answers

Can you reset a dryer thermal fuse?

No. A dryer thermal fuse is a one-time part. Once it opens it stays open and has to be replaced. Some dryers also have resettable thermostats, which are different parts.

How do I know if my dryer thermal fuse is blown?

With a blown thermal fuse, on many dryers the dryer will not start at all. On others, it runs but does not heat. A continuity test with a multimeter, with the dryer unplugged, confirms it.

Why does my dryer keep blowing thermal fuses?

Almost always restricted airflow: lint in the dryer, or a clogged, crushed or overly long vent. Less often, a faulty cycling thermostat or heating element. Fix the cause before fitting another fuse.

Is it safe to run a dryer without the thermal fuse?

No. Never bypass it. It is the part that cuts the power when the dryer overheats.

Where is the thermal fuse on a Whirlpool dryer?

On most Whirlpool, Maytag and Kenmore dryers built by Whirlpool, the dryer thermal fuse is on the blower housing or exhaust duct, behind the rear panel. Check the parts diagram for your model number.
