3-second answer: Water under your washing machine almost always comes from one of three places: a worn door seal (front-loaders), a loose or cracked hose, or a failing drain pump. Less often it’s the tub seal, an overflow from too much detergent, or simply an unlevel machine. Most leaks are traceable in a few minutes once you know when during the cycle the water appears — that timing is the biggest clue to the cause.

On front-loaders, the door gasket is the number-one leak source — check it for tears and trapped debris first.

First: when does the water appear?

Before you pull the machine apart, watch one wash and note when the puddle forms — it narrows the cause fast:

  • While filling → supply hoses or the water-inlet valve.
  • During the wash/agitate → door seal (front-load), tub seal, or an internal hose.
  • Only when draining/spinning → the drain hose or drain pump.
  • Right after adding detergent → oversudsing overflow, not a true leak.

7 reasons a washing machine leaks from the bottom

  1. Worn or torn door gasket (front-loaders). The rubber boot around the door tears or traps coins and lint, letting water escape during the wash. The most common front-load leak.
  2. Loose or cracked fill/drain hoses. Connections vibrate loose over time, and hoses crack with age. Check both the supply hoses at the back and the drain hose.
  3. Failing drain pump. Cracked housings or worn seals on the pump leak during the drain cycle — you’ll see water only when it pumps out.
  4. Worn tub seal or bearing. Water leaking from the centre-bottom during the wash often means the tub seal has failed — a bigger repair.
  5. Too much detergent / oversudsing. Excess suds overflow the tub, especially if you’re not using HE detergent in an HE machine. This looks like a leak but isn’t a broken part.
  6. Clogged or overflowing dispenser. A blocked detergent drawer can back up and run down the front or sides.
  7. An unlevel machine. A washer that rocks can slosh water out and stress hoses — a surprisingly common, easy fix.

A 5-step way to find the leak

Unplug the washer and shut off the water before you start.

  1. Inspect the door gasket (front-load): run your finger around the rubber boot feeling for tears, and pull back the folds to clear coins, lint, and grime.
  2. Check the hoses. Tighten the fill-hose connections at the back, look for cracks or bulges, and make sure the drain hose is seated and not split.
  3. Look at the drain pump. Behind the lower access panel, check the pump and its filter for cracks, leaks, or trapped debris (coins, hairpins).
  4. Level the machine. Adjust the feet until it doesn’t rock — an unlevel washer leaks and walks.
  5. Run a test wash and watch. With everything checked, run a short cycle and note where and when water appears. Water from the centre-bottom during the wash points to the tub seal — that’s a pro job.

Loose or cracked hoses at the back are an easy, common cause — tighten the connections and check for splits before suspecting the pump.

Detergent and overflow “leaks”

Not every puddle is a broken part. If water appears as foam shortly after the wash starts, you’re likely oversudsing. Use only HE detergent in a high-efficiency machine, and cut back to the recommended dose — most people use far more than needed. A clogged dispenser drawer can also overflow; pull it out and rinse it clean. Fixing these costs nothing and rules out a service call.

When to call a pro

Call a technician if:

  • Water leaks from the centre-bottom during the wash (tub seal or bearing).
  • The drain pump is cracked, leaking, or noisy.
  • You’ve checked the gasket, hoses, and detergent and it still leaks.
  • There’s a burning smell or the machine trips the breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my washing machine leaking from the bottom?

Most bottom leaks come from a worn door gasket on front-loaders, a loose or cracked hose, or a failing drain pump. Less common causes are a worn tub seal, oversudsing from too much detergent, a clogged dispenser, or an unlevel machine. Noting when in the cycle the water appears is the fastest way to pin down which one.

Is it safe to use a washing machine that’s leaking?

No. Even a small leak can damage flooring and subfloor, and water near electrical components is a shock and short-circuit risk. Stop using it, unplug it, shut off the water, and diagnose or book a repair before running another load.

Can too much detergent make my washer leak?

Yes. Excess suds, or using non-HE detergent in an HE machine, can overflow the tub and look exactly like a leak. Switch to HE detergent and cut back to the recommended dose; if the puddle stops, it was oversudsing, not a broken part.

Why does my washer only leak when it drains or spins?

A leak that appears only during draining or spinning usually points to the drain hose or the drain pump. Check that the drain hose is seated and not split, then inspect the pump and its filter for cracks or trapped debris behind the lower panel.

How do I know if it’s the tub seal?

Water leaking from the centre-bottom of the machine during the wash, often with a rumbling or grinding noise, typically means the tub seal or bearing has failed. This is a bigger repair best handled by a technician rather than a DIY fix.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking washing machine?

If checking the gasket, hoses, and detergent does not solve it, a professional diagnostic at Appliance Forever is a flat $89 service call, applied to the repair when you go ahead. You get an upfront quote before any work, and many hose, pump, and gasket repairs are completed in the same visit.
