What's Actually Wrong With Your Dryer
The faults we are actually called out for in Barrie, and what each one usually means.
No heat at all
On an electric dryer this is almost always the heating element, the thermal fuse, or the operating thermostat — and the three are connected in a way most people never learn until the fuse blows twice. The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that opens when exhaust temperature runs too high, and a partially blocked or crushed vent is the single biggest cause of that overheat. Replace the fuse without fixing the vent and it blows again within a few loads. On a gas dryer the same no-heat symptom usually traces to the igniter, the flame sensor, or one of the gas valve coils — a weak igniter will glow but not draw enough current to open the valve, so the drum turns and the load stays cold and damp.
Takes two or three cycles to dry one load
This is the complaint we hear most on dryers, and in the majority of Barrie calls the machine itself tests fine — the exhaust vent is restricted. Lint packs into elbows, a flexible section gets crushed behind the machine, or a long straight run to an exterior hood has simply never been cleaned. Restricted airflow shows up as “slow” long before it trips a safety device, which is why this symptom almost never means a broken dryer. Won't start at all
Usually the door switch, a blown thermal fuse, the start switch itself, or a drive motor that has lost its start winding. A door switch that clicks but doesn’t hold, or a dryer that hums for a second and then goes silent, points at different parts of that list — which is why we test each in sequence rather than replacing the first likely suspect.
Hums but the drum won't turn
The motor is running, so power and the start circuit are fine — the fault is mechanical. Most often a broken or slipped drive belt, a seized idler pulley, or drum support rollers (or the rear bearing) that have worn out and locked up. Leave it running in this state for long and you risk burning out the motor trying to turn a drum it physically cannot move.
Loud grinding or squealing
Support rollers, felt drum glides, or a failing idler pulley bearing — usually diagnosable by running the dryer empty for a few seconds and listening to where the noise comes from. It gets louder over weeks, not better, and the rollers themselves are inexpensive parts relative to the labour of leaving it until the drum drags on bare metal.
A burning smell when it runs
Treat this one as urgent, not routine. Lint built up against the heating element or, on a gas unit, the burner housing is a genuine fire risk — stop using the dryer and call rather than run one more load to see if it’s fine. It usually isn’t just the smell of new lint burning off; it means lint is somewhere it shouldn’t be.
Gas, Electric, Vented or Condenser — and Why TSSA Matters in Simcoe County
Gas and electric dryers fail in different places, and only one of them is legally restricted work. Electric dryers fail at the element, the thermal fuse and the thermostats. Gas dryers fail at the igniter, the gas valve coils (usually two, wired in series — either one failing stops gas flow) and the flame sensor, which cuts the gas supply if it doesn’t detect a flame within a few seconds of ignition. In Ontario, any technician touching those gas-side parts must hold a TSSA licence. We do.
Most homes in Barrie run vented dryers — they push hot, moist air outside through ductwork, which is exactly the airflow that gets restricted over time. A growing number of condos and newer builds run condenser or heat-pump dryers instead, which don’t vent outside at all; they condense the moisture into a drain line or a removable reservoir. They fail differently — a clogged internal condenser or heat exchanger produces the same “slow to dry” complaint with no exterior vent to blame, and heat-pump units add their own components (a small refrigerant circuit and compressor) that a vented-dryer diagnosis won’t touch. One more thing worth knowing if you’re outside Barrie’s gas grid: a good number of homes through Oro-Medonte, Springwater and the townships run on propane rather than natural gas. Propane dryers need a different orifice size and regulator setting, and a unit converted incorrectly will burn with a lazy yellow flame and soot the burner housing. Dryer Error Codes We See Most
- Samsung HE / tE / dC — HE and tE point at the heating circuit or a thermistor fault; dC means the drum isn’t turning as expected, usually a belt or motor issue.
- LG D80 / D90 / D95 — all three mean the same underlying thing: restricted airflow. LG’s own manual points straight at the vent before any part on the machine.
- Whirlpool / Maytag F01, F22, F26, PF — F01 is a main control board fault, F22 and F26 are thermistor/heater circuit faults, and PF is a power interruption code that usually just needs clearing.
- GE E1 — moisture sensor or thermistor circuit fault.
A code narrows the search; it is not the diagnosis. We still test the part before we replace it.
