What's Actually Wrong With Your Oven
The faults we are actually called out for in Barrie, and what each one usually means.
The oven will not heat at all
On an electric oven this is most often a failed bake element — you can usually see the break or a blistered spot on the element itself. On a gas oven it is far more often the igniter. A weak igniter is the fault people misdiagnose most: it still glows orange, so the oven looks fine, but it no longer draws enough current to open the gas safety valve. If it glows and nothing lights within about 90 seconds, the igniter is the part, not the valve.
It heats, but everything bakes wrong
Cakes sinking, one side browning, a roast that takes half an hour longer than it used to. That is normally the oven temperature sensor drifting out of spec, or a control board that has lost calibration. We measure the sensor’s actual resistance against the manufacturer’s spec rather than guessing — a sensor reading 200 ohms off will hold the oven 40°F below the number on the display.
The self-clean cycle killed the oven
Extremely common, and worth knowing before you run it: self-clean drives the cavity past 800°F, and that heat is what trips the thermal fuse or cooks the control board. If your oven went dead after a clean cycle, tell us — it points us straight at the fuse and the board and usually saves a diagnostic step.
The door is locked and will not release
Also a self-clean aftermath. The door lock motor or its switch has failed mid-cycle. Do not force it — the mechanism is easy to break and the replacement part is far more expensive than the repair.
Broil works but bake does not (or the reverse)
Two separate elements and, on many models, two separate relays on the control board. When one function works and the other does not, the fault is nearly always in the dead circuit rather than in the oven as a whole — which usually makes it a cheaper repair than people expect.
You can smell gas
Stop reading and act. Do not switch anything on or off, leave the door open, get everyone out, and call Enbridge’s emergency line from outside. Then call us — a gas leak is TSSA-licensed work and it is not a DIY repair under any circumstances.
Gas or Electric — and Why TSSA Matters in Simcoe County
A gas oven and an electric oven fail in different places, and only one of them is legally restricted work. Electric ovens fail at the elements, the sensor and the board. Gas ovens fail at the igniter, the gas safety valve, the flame sensor and the pressure regulator — and in Ontario, any technician touching those parts must hold a TSSA licence. We do. Most companies advertising oven repair in Barrie simply do not mention the regulator, which is worth asking any company you call.
One thing that matters specifically here: a good number of homes outside Barrie’s gas grid — through Oro-Medonte, Springwater and the townships — run on propane rather than natural gas. Propane appliances need different orifices and a different regulator setting, and an oven converted incorrectly will burn with a lazy yellow flame and soot the cavity. If your range was converted, mention it when you book.

Oven Error Codes We See Most
- Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid F1, F2, F3 — temperature sensor or its wiring. F2 commonly appears after a self-clean overheat.
- Whirlpool F9 / F9 E0 — door lock circuit; frequently the lock motor rather than the board.
- Samsung E-08 / E-27 — temperature sensor open or shorted.
- LG F19 / F9 — the oven is not reaching temperature in the expected time; igniter on gas models, element on electric.
- Frigidaire F10 — runaway temperature, usually a stuck relay. Stop using the oven until this one is repaired.
