TL;DR: dishwasher not cleaning dishes

  • Start with the checks you can do yourself: the cycle you picked, how the racks are loaded, a dirty filter, the detergent, and water that is not hot enough.
  • A smaller set of faults need a technician: a worn wash pump, or a weak fill from the water inlet valve.
  • Safety first. Switch the dishwasher off at the breaker before you reach inside, and never bypass a door switch.
  • Checked everything and the dishes are still dirty? That is where we come in. Call 647-834-4646. The $89 visit is credited to the repair when you approve it.

A dishwasher not cleaning dishes comes down to loading, detergent, the filter or the spray arms, and you can check all four yourself. If the filter and arms are clear, the loading and detergent are right and the water is hot, the cause is likely a part: a wash pump that has worn, or a water inlet valve that is not letting enough water in.

Take these in order: the safe checks first, then the repair causes, so you know what to tell us when you call.

Before anything else: switch the dishwasher off at the breaker, not just at the door. If it just ran, give it a few minutes, because the water and the parts inside can be hot.

Why is my dishwasher not cleaning dishes?

Something is stopping the water from reaching the dishes, or the water is not doing its job once it gets there. Common causes are debris in the filter or spray arms, dishes loaded so they block the arms, the wrong cycle, and the wrong amount of detergent.

Filmy glasses and gritty plates are not always a detergent problem. They can point to blocked spray arms, a worn wash pump or hard-water scale, and we find which one it is before we quote anything.

7 checks you can do yourself before you call

Work through these in order. Breaker off before you put a hand in.

  1. Look at the cycle you chose. A rinse cycle will not clean dishes, and a Quick Wash or 30-minute cycle may not clean heavily soiled ones. If you have been running the short cycle, run a normal one on the next load.
  2. Look at how it is loaded. Poor loading is a listed cause of dirty dishes, and nothing should block the spray arm. Put the dirtiest items on the bottom rack, with plates, bowls and cups soiled side down and angled toward the spray arm. Do not stack or nest, and do not overcrowd. Then turn each spray arm by hand. It should spin freely.
  3. Check the detergent. Use powder, liquid or tablets, and stay within the recommended amount or the maximum fill lines. One pack or tablet is enough for a normal load, and other soaps cause suds or residue. Open the dispenser after a cycle. If detergent is still in it, the dispenser may be blocked.
  4. Stop pre-rinsing. Scrape the plates, but do not rinse them. Thorough pre-rinsing can make the soil sensor on some newer dishwashers read the load as cleaner than it is, which gives a shorter or less effective cycle.
  5. Check that the water is hot. Whirlpool suggests running the hot tap at the sink closest to the dishwasher for at least 30 seconds before you start a cycle, so hot water reaches the machine. Samsung puts its water-heater range at 49 to 65°C (120 to 149°F).
  6. Clean the filter, the glass trap and the spray arms. Debris can sit in all three, so clean all three. Pull the lower rack, lift out the filter, rinse it, and look through the holes in each spray arm. Do this regularly, not just when dishes come out dirty.
  7. Run a cleaning cycle. Samsung suggests one monthly, or about every 24 uses. Follow your manual for what to use. After cleaning the filter, glass trap and spray arms, Frigidaire says to run an empty cycle on the highest heat setting. Check your manual to see that it applies to your model.

Do those seven and run a normal load. If the dishes come out clean, that was the problem. If you are still looking at a dishwasher not cleaning dishes, keep reading.

Cloudy glasses or a white film

Hard-water minerals leave a cloudy film on glassware. Rinse aid or a hard-water detergent formula helps, because rinse aid minimizes mineral build-up. Too much detergent, or a water softener, can contribute to etching on glass, and no cleaning will reverse it. This is a detergent and water question, not a repair.

Dishwasher not cleaning top rack

When only the top rack comes out dirty, check the upper spray arm first. Improper loading can block the spray arms from moving, so check that the arms turn freely, that the loading is right and that the filter is clear.

That is three quick looks:

  • Pull the top rack and spin the upper arm by hand.
  • Check that a tall item or a flat tray is not sitting against the arm or the water path.
  • Look through the holes in the arm for debris.

If the top rack is still dirty after all three while the bottom rack is clean, call us. We can look at the arm and the water reaching it.

Dishwasher not cleaning well: when it is a repair

If the filter and arms are clean, the loading and detergent are right and the water is hot, the cause is no longer your habits. Here is what we look for, and what it means for you. Mechanical issues are for a professional.

What you seeLikely causeCan you fix it?
Filmy glasses or gritty plates, weak spray, after the filter and arms are cleanA worn wash pump, or hard-water scaleNo. Call a technician.
Low water in the tub, dishes barely wetA weak or slow fill may point to the water inlet valve. Danby’s troubleshooting page lists checking the inlet valve for proper water flow.No. Check only that the water supply is on, then call.

Dirty dishes, but every check above was fineSomething we have to look at to name. We find which one it is before we quote anything.No. Book a visit.

Leave the control board and the wiring alone. Nobody should work on those with the power on. If you hear the pump humming without spraying, smell something burning or see water on the floor, switch it off at the breaker and call.

Our post on a dishwasher not draining covers the standing-water version. If the machine is loud, the dishwasher making strange noises post explains what each sound means.

Dirty dishes: quick answers

Why is my dishwasher not cleaning dishes?

Common causes are a clogged filter, blocked spray arms, poor loading, the wrong cycle or the wrong amount of detergent. If all of those are fine, a worn wash pump or a weak water inlet valve is more likely.

Why are my dishes still dirty after I changed detergent?

Check the amount and the type first. One pack or tablet is enough for a normal load, and other soaps cause suds or residue. Hard water leaves a cloudy film, which rinse aid or a hard-water formula helps with.

Why won’t my dishwasher clean the top rack?

Loading that blocks the spray arms from moving is the first thing to check. Make sure the arms turn freely, the loading is right and the filter is clear.

Does pre-rinsing help?

No. Scrape the plates but do not rinse them. Pre-rinsing can fool the soil sensor on some newer models into a less effective cycle.

How hot should the water be?

Run the hot tap at the sink closest to the machine for at least 30 seconds first, so hot water reaches it. The water heater should deliver 49 to 65°C (120 to 149°F).
