If you are reading this, someone has probably already said the word “compressor” to you, and the price is only half of what you want to know. The other half is whether it is worth paying, which is what the forum threads and Q&A sites at the top of this search keep circling back to. Then there is the question hardly anyone asks, and it can save you the most: did the compressor actually fail? We will get to all three.
Is it worth replacing a fridge compressor?
It is worth replacing when the compressor part is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, when the fridge is a premium or built-in model, or when the rest of the fridge is sound and the quote sits well under half the price of a comparable new one. Outside those cases, replacing the fridge often makes more sense.
We look at three things, in this order, before we would put a compressor into anyone’s fridge.
Step 1: is the compressor part still under warranty?
Start here, because it can settle the whole thing. Some manufacturers, LG and Samsung among them on certain models, cover the compressor for longer than the rest of the fridge. If yours is inside that window, the part may be covered, and the bill becomes mostly labour. The details sit in the next section.
Step 2: what kind of fridge is it?
A premium or built-in fridge costs far more to replace, and a new one has to fit the cabinet opening you already have. That pushes the answer toward repair, even at the top of the price range. A standard freestanding fridge is the opposite case: the half-price test does most of the deciding.
Step 3: how is the rest of the fridge doing?
A young fridge in good shape is a far better home for a new compressor than an older one that has already needed other repairs. These usually point toward replacing, whatever the quote says:
- Rust, a cracked liner or a cabinet in poor shape.
- Other parts already failing, or several repairs in a short stretch.
- A fridge you were planning to replace in the next while anyway.
Then run the half-price test with your own numbers. Look up what the fridge you would actually buy costs today and halve it. A quote well under that line is a reasonable repair. A quote near or over it usually means your money does more in a new fridge, and if the quote crosses that line, we tell you so.
Check the compressor warranty before anything else
Before you spend money on a compressor, find out whether the part is covered. On some LG and Samsung models, the compressor carries longer coverage than the rest of the fridge, but the length and the terms vary by model and purchase date, so check yours rather than assume.
Three steps, and you can do all of them from the kitchen:
- Find the model and serial number. They are usually on a label inside the fresh-food compartment, often on a side wall or near the top.
- Look up the warranty terms for that model, or call the manufacturer with both numbers ready.
- Ask one specific question: does the compressor coverage include labour, or only the part?
That last question matters because a covered part is not the same as a free repair. When the manufacturer covers only the compressor itself, the labour is often still yours to pay, and on a sealed-system job the labour is a big part of the bill.

Is a fridge compressor expensive to replace? Yes. It is the priciest repair on our fridge price list, and the next most expensive repairs top out at $420. The reason is where the compressor sits.
Why the compressor costs more than every other fridge repair
The compressor is the black, rounded canister at the bottom rear of most household fridges, and it is part of the sealed refrigerant system. Replacing it is not a bolt-on swap like a fan or a relay. The refrigerant has to be recovered, the old compressor cut out and the new one brazed in, then the system is pulled into a vacuum and recharged. The part is only one piece of the bill; that sealed-system work is the rest of it.
What moves the price inside the range
Where a quote lands between $500 and $900 or more comes down to a few things:
- Brand and model. The exact compressor for one fridge can cost quite differently from the one for the next.
- Compressor type. Many newer fridges use linear or inverter compressors, which differ in part cost from a standard compressor.
- Standard or premium. Premium and built-in units sit at the top of the range, or above it.
- Access. Some fridges are easier to get into than others, and the labour follows that.

Is it really the compressor? The cheaper parts that mimic it
Not always. A fridge that has stopped cooling while the light and fans still work is the classic “dead compressor” picture, but a failed start relay, a stopped fan motor, a frozen-up defrost system or a control board can produce the same thing. Every one of those costs less than the bottom of the compressor range.

Start relay or capacitor
The start relay, and on some models a capacitor, gives the compressor the kick it needs to start. When it fails, the compressor cannot get going, and you may hear a click from the back of the fridge, then silence, repeating every few minutes. It sounds like a compressor giving up, and the repair is $170 to $320 all-in. Condenser or evaporator fan motor
If a fan stops moving air across the coils, the fridge can warm up even with a perfectly healthy compressor running. Replacing the fan motor costs $200 to $380, still below where a compressor quote starts.
Defrost system
When the defrost system stops working, frost builds over the evaporator coils and chokes the airflow. Thermostat or control board
A faulty sensor or board may simply never call for cooling, so the compressor stays idle and gets blamed for it. Sorting that out costs $200 to $420.
Signs it really is the compressor
No single symptom proves it, and each of these overlaps with one of the cheaper faults above. Taken together, they make the compressor the likely suspect:
- The fridge is warm, but the light and the fans still work.
- The compressor is hot to the touch and not running, or tries to start and clicks off.
- It runs without stopping and still cannot hold temperature.
- It is silent, with power confirmed at the fridge.
A compressor should only be condemned once the relay, fans, defrost and controls have been tested and ruled out. If you have a compressor quote in hand and nobody checked those parts, a proper diagnosis is worth it before you spend $500 or more.
