Is it worth repairing a refrigerator?
In most cases, yes. When a single common part has failed and the rest of the fridge is sound, the repair is almost always the better deal. The decision only gets close with a compressor or sealed-system fault, or when the quote comes near half the price of the fridge you would buy instead.
Treat the half-price line as a rough guide, and run it with your own figure. Look up the fridge you would actually buy today, the same size and type, and halve its price. A repair well under that line is worth doing. A repair near or over it usually is not, and if our quote crosses that line, we tell you so on the visit.
A few things point toward replacing, whatever the quote says:
- Rust, or a cabinet and doors in poor shape.
- Other parts already failing alongside the one you called about.
- Several repairs in a short stretch.
- A fridge you were already planning to replace.
One thing pulls the other way. A built-in or premium fridge costs more to replace, and a new one has to fit the existing cabinet opening, so even a larger repair often still makes sense there. That often applies to premium units such as True Residential refrigerators.

Am I being overpriced? How to check a fridge repair quote
Start with the part. Find its row above. If your quote lands somewhere near our range, fine. If it is way off, ask why. Keep in mind these are our own numbers, not an average of every shop in town, so a different price on its own proves nothing.
Then ask four things:
- Which part, exactly? “Cooling repair” is not a part. You cannot check a price if nobody tells you what it is for.
- What is parts and what is labour? We write ours down before we start: part, labour, total.
- What warranty comes with it, and for how long? Ours is 90 days, parts and labour. Same fault back inside that window? We come back free.
- Is the service call credited? Say yes to our repair and the $89 comes off.
One more, and it is the big one. Fridge stopped cooling, and the quote says compressor? Ask if anyone tested the start relay. When the relay dies, the compressor cannot start, so the fridge acts like it needs a $500-plus compressor. The actual part might be sitting in the $170 to $320 row.
Two honest shops can still quote the same symptom differently. The same part costs more on one brand or model than another, and only the model number tells you which part you actually need. Look for the label inside the fresh-food section or along a door edge; it moves around from fridge to fridge. Read it to us when you call. What goes into a refrigerator repair cost quote
Three things. The visit, the part, the labour. The visit is $89 flat, and it disappears from the invoice once you approve the work. The part and the time it takes to reach it are what push a quote up or down inside its row.
So be wary of anyone who gives you an exact figure over the phone. “My fridge is warm” could mean a fan, the defrost system, a thermostat or the compressor. Look at the table: those are very different numbers. Only someone standing at the fridge can tell which one you have.

Fridge warm, freezer still cold: fan or defrost
When the freezer holds temperature but the fresh-food side warms up, the cause is often an evaporator fan or a defrost fault that stops cold air reaching the fridge side, not the compressor. Frost building up: the defrost system
Frost that keeps building inside the freezer points toward the defrost system: the heater, the timer or the defrost thermostat. It is also often paired with a door seal that no longer closes tight. Either way, it is a $190 to $380 repair and almost always worth doing.
Door not sealing: the gasket
A torn or flattened door gasket lets cold air out, so the fridge runs longer and may frost up or sweat near the door. It is the cheapest row in the table at $160 to $300, and one of the easiest yes decisions.
Leaking water or no ice: the inlet valve

Wrong temperature or an error code: thermostat or board
A fridge that runs too warm, too cold or shows an error code on a blank or unresponsive display usually comes down to the control board, a temperature sensor or the user interface panel. That is the $200 to $420 row, the dearest of the common repairs, and still usually worth it on a sound fridge.
Clicking at the back: the start relay
Buzzing or clicking from the back or bottom of the fridge points to the condenser fan motor or the compressor relay. A click, then silence, repeating every few minutes, is a common sign of a relay that can no longer start the compressor. It is a $170 to $320 repair, and it is the one to rule out before anyone condemns the compressor.
