A gas range hookup costs more than an electric range install for one reason: it’s gas work, and in Ontario gas work must be done by a licensed, TSSA-certified technician. This is the one installation you should never DIY, and it’s the clearest place where paying for the right tech protects your home and your warranty.
Here’s what a proper gas range hookup actually involves:
- Inspecting the existing gas line and shut-off valve — confirming the line, valve, and pressure are correct for the appliance.
- Installing a proper flex connector — a code-approved appliance connector rated for the range, never an old or reused rubber line.
- Connecting the range and securing it, including any anti-tip bracket the unit calls for.
- Performing a leak test — a soap or electronic test on every joint to confirm there is no gas leak before the appliance is used.
- Verifying ignition and operation across all burners and the oven.
The flex connector, valve work, and the leak test are exactly why this job is priced above an electric range — and exactly why it has to be a licensed tech. Never DIY a gas appliance hookup. Connecting a gas range, cooktop, or dryer involves the gas line, the shut-off valve, and a flex connector that has to be leak-tested. In Ontario this work is legally restricted to TSSA-certified technicians. If you ever smell gas, leave the area and call your gas utility first. Over-the-range & built-in microwave installation
Microwaves split into two very different installs. A countertop microwave needs no installation — you plug it in. But an over-the-range (OTR) microwave or a built-in/trim-kit microwave is real work, and the cost reflects it.
An OTR microwave install includes:
- Mounting — locating the wall studs, fitting the mounting plate, and lifting a heavy unit into place (typically a two-person job for safety).

- Run length and bends. A short, straight run to an exterior wall is simple. A long run, multiple elbows, or routing through a finished ceiling adds material and labour.

Fridge water lines, washers, wall ovens & cooktops
The remaining common installs follow the same logic — the connections decide the cost:
- Refrigerator water line. A plain fridge is a plug-and-slide. The cost appears when it has an ice maker or water dispenser that needs a water line tapped in — running new tubing and adding a shut-off valve where none exists is the main variable. A clean tie-in to an existing, working line is quick.
- Washing machine hoses. A washer install is connecting the hot and cold supply hoses, the drain, and levelling the machine so it doesn’t vibrate or walk. The cost rises if the shut-off valves are old and seized, or if you’re upgrading to braided steel hoses (strongly recommended over rubber to prevent burst-hose flooding).
- Wall ovens. A built-in wall oven is a heavier, more involved install — it’s often hardwired, has to be supported safely in the cabinet opening, and on gas models requires a TSSA-certified hookup. Removing the old built-in unit is part of the job.
